The East Anglian Railway Museum publishes a range of books, mainly on local railway subjects - you can purchase these below, and we will send them out to you. The Museum is funded entirely by donations, visitors and sales of merchandise including books, help support the Museum by purchasing a book below.

The Stour Valley Railway by BDJ Walsh.

This is the third edition of B.D.J. Walsh’s book about the cross country line from Marks Tey to Sudbury, Haverhill and on to Cambridge. It details its rise and fall, together with closure of the Cambridge to Sudbury section in 1967, leaving the diesel operated rump between Sudbury and Marks Tey that to this day provides an hourly train service seven days a week.

First published in the mid-1970s, this edition was published in 2008.

This is the second edition of a photographic album compiled by E. W. Lawrence covering the country line from Marks Tey to Sudbury, Haverhill and on to Cambridge.

Branch Line to Southminster by Dennis Swindale.

This is the third edition of Dennis Swindale’s book giving the history of the South Essex branch line from Wickford to Southminster, for long an outpost of diesel multiple unit operation but finally electrified in 1986.

Branch Lines to Braintree by Carl Lombardelli.

Carl Lombardelli’s book covers the cross country line from Witham to Bishops Stortford from its inception through to closure of the Braintree to Bishops Stortford section, plus the planned closure of the Witham to Braintree section that was successfully fought and subsequently electrified.

This is the third edition of the title, first published in 1980: this edition was published in 2009.

69621 – Star of the Jazz.

This gives a brief history of the N7 class locomotive, together with a more detailed look at 69621, the last locomotive to be built at Stratford Works and now located at the East Anglian Railway Museum at Chappel & Wakes Colne.

The Kelvedon to Tollesbury Railway: A Pictorial History.

Mark House has compiled this mainly pictorial history of one of the most rural branch lines to operate in Essex, with some unusual carriages and heavy seasonal freight traffic.

Tendring Hundred Railway.

This 128 page book gives details of the history and development of the lines from Colchester to Clacton on Sea and Walton on the Naze, together with a rich variety of illustrations from over the years.

A History of Witham Station by John Palombi.

John Palombi has written what is believed to be the most in depth history of any station other than major termini: the book includes the development of the railway and the effect that it had on this small market town.

This book is in larger A4 format to give justice to the large number of illustrations, and was published in 2024.

Alright Spider! by David Tyson

This is the memoirs of David Tyson, a train driver for many years based at Norwich, who at various stages of his career served as President of the train drivers union ASLEF and on the Railway Pensions Committee. It is best described by Christian Wolmar, Britain’s leading transport commentator thus: “ A gritty and incisive account of a life on the railway. Tyson writes with passion and charm, offering countless revealing anecdotes about a job he clearly loved”.
