Weight: 29 tons

8 compartments

CL coaches feature first and second class sections with compartments and a corridor. 2 toilets separate the classes. There is no corridor connection to allow access to adjacent coaches. There are 3 first class compartments with 3-a-side seating and 5 standard class compartments with 4-a-side seating. The seats against the coach ends extend the full width of the coach and seat 4 first and 6 second class passengers. CL coaches were specific to the Eastern region and were used on branch lines until they were replaced by DMU/EMUs then they moved onto the Moorgate/Kings Cross to Hertford North, Cambridge/Peterborough lines. CL coaches ran on these lines from 1955-1977. 43042 was in service from 1954 until the mid 70s when it was moved into preservation at the Strathspey railway. They used it until the mid 90s when it became surplus to their requirements. It was stored outside until 2016 and has been undercover since. The EARM decided to buy the coach to be able to have a suburban set with the Brake Second coach that is currently being overhauled.

Work in Progress Now
After taking delivery a full examination has been undertaken, and initial work plans started. It is basically sound, water tight, normal Mk1 body rot around the windows. All repairable. The main issue is the doors. At the present time Doors are being left in situ to keep the weather out, but once the Mk1 BCK comes out of the restoration shed in September resplendant in it’s new Maroon livery, the CL will take it’s place. Doors will then be removed, repaired, and in some cases replaced, new door frames to fit and re-fitment of doors.
Before then is the Chappel Beer Festival 9-13 Sept. The CL will be diplayed alongside the BCK coach to demostrate the before and after states of restoration at Chappel. We do of course need money to do all this work, and collections will be undertaken at the Beer Festival.
The Restoration project is run by Volunteers at the East Anglian Railway Museum and funded by donations, if you can help in any way either by Volunteering or making a donation this would be appreciated. Please see the Lamport donation details below or the volunteering page here
